This is a Remington 12-gauge shotgun.
It is used mostly for hunting birds, rabbits, and squirrels, but can also be used to
hunt deer.
Dale's father won it in a raffle--paid $1 for a ticket. He gave it to our son,
Mark.
I had no shotgun shells to photograph for you. Sorry.
Shotguns have a powerful recoil or "kick" when fired. This one has not
been used much, but has much sentimental value to me.

This is an SKS assault rifle that works
well hunting deer. The first deer I ever killed, I shot with this gun--before I
mounted the telescopic sight on it.
The cartridges for it are 7.62 mm in diameter and are pictured below (third from the
left, second tallest).
Russians engineers designed it, but this one was built in China.
|
From left to right just beyond the
wooden ruler: a 9 millimeter cartridge, a .30-'06 cartridge, a 7mm cartridge for the SKS
assault rifle, and several other 9mm cartridges.
The designation " .30-'06" is spoken as "thirty ought six."
The .30 tells us that the slug is three-tenths of an inch in diameter; the '06
tells us that it was invented in 1906. I shot two deer one season with a borrowed
.30-'06 rifle. Recently this rifle was given to me.

This is a 9mm semiautomatic handgun.
It is popular with police officers because the clip will hold 15 rounds and it can
be reloaded very quickly.
Cartridges for it are pictured above (silver-colored casings), and several are in
front of the wooden ruler.
9mm is very close to .30 caliber.
|
This .38 Special is a six-shot
revolver.
The .38 tells you that the slug is .38 inches in diameter.
Six cartridges are pictured with it.
Dale's sister, Linda, has it now.

Here is another shot of the
.38 Special
with the revolver open so you can see where the six cartridges are placed.
The barrel is about 4 inches long. The coffee mug helps provide perspective.
This is a very good shooting handgun.
|
This is a Colt .22 caliber
pistol.
This is a very small bore handgun, good only for target shooting.
Cartridges for it are small and inexpensive.
This does not offer good protection from a human attacker. Use the .38 Special
or the 9mm instead.

And here is a .30-06 rifle that was a gift.
I killed two deer with it
one season.
This is an excellent all-round hunting rifle.
