Single-Source Items

By Steve Badger

“Your computer has a bad SID chip,” my friend Bob said matter-of-factly. He’d just finished troubleshooting my kids’ broken computer when he announced his diagnosis, following it with, “And that particular chip is probably a single-source item.”

“What do you mean, ‘single-source item’?” I asked, hoping his answer wouldn’t be too expensive.

“That means you can buy it only from one place—the manufacturer,” Bob replied. “C’mon. we’ll see if it’s in any of my parts catalogs.”

Thirty minutes and a dozen catalogs later, Bob was confident he had confirmed his original opinion. If I wanted to fix the computer, I’d have to purchase that chip from the manufacturer. It was a single-source item. No need to waste more time looking through non-suppliers’ catalogs.

We often seek some of our life needs from non-suppliers too. We fail to realize there is only one Source for everything we need to fix our broken lives.

What needs am I talking about?

Faith in God. Forgiveness. Everlasting life. All of these are single-source items. So are peace of mind and comfort during grief.

Joy, hope, love, patience, righteousness, self-control, humility, gentleness, compassion, and healings—all essential for repairing our malfunctioning “computers,” and all are single-source items. I can only get them from my original Manufacturer, the Creator.

When I seek life needs from non-suppliers, I am frustrated because the genuine article is available only from the Manufacturer. Anything I may get elsewhere won’t really work.

All my life needs are single-source items. So I guess if I want to keep my “computer” running, I’ll have to go to Him to get the parts I need.
