If "Christ is the Answer," What's the Question?

Once several years ago, my brother and I were driving down the highway. I read aloud the car tag on the front of the car coming toward us: “Christ is the answer.”

“If Christ is the answer,” he responded, “what’s the question?”

We smiled and thought we were pretty smart.

Today I realize that this car tag was right. Not only that, but I also know what the question is—or more correctly, what the questions are.

In a nutshell, Christ is the answer to all the questions of life.

But, the questions of life are not: Who was the 16th president of the US? Or, How long is the Mississippi River? Or, What is the value of pi?

Then what are the questions of life like? They’re a lot like these questions asked by thousands of people just like you every day:
bulletWho can take my loneliness away?
bulletWhat can I do about my overwhelming fear of dying?
bulletI was abused. Who can help me?
bulletWhat will restore my shattered marriage?
bulletHow will I be able to care for my aged parents?
bulletMy spouse has been unfaithful. What should I do?
bulletMy son is on drugs. What will happen to him?
bulletWe can’t pay our bills, and we’ll have to file for bankruptcy. Who will help?
bulletWhere can I find direction in this confusing world?
bulletWhere can I find the strength to overcome my destructive behavior habits?
bulletHow will I ever save enough money for retirement?
bulletI have trouble sleeping and often have bad dreams. Where can I gain peace of mind?
bulletMy wife needs medical help, but we cannot afford it. What can we do?
bulletMy unmarried daughter is pregnant and considering an abortion. What should she do?
bulletMy life has so little meaning, I’m thinking of ending my life. Does life have meaning?
bulletWho will help me build character and integrity in my children?
bulletSomeone close to me has died. Will I survive my grief?

If any of these strikes a responsive chord, read on.

So, how can you make Christ the answer to the questions of your life?

  1. Recognize that you need God’s forgiveness. Why? Because we have all sinned.
  2. Quit depending on your own abilities, turn to God, and ask Him to forgive you—on the basis of Jesus’ death on the cross.
  3. Put your trust in Christ Jesus as your savior and ruler.
  4. Get involved with a group of others who are trying to do the same thing with their lives.

Christ is the answer. But He also provides answers to life’s questions by directing you. One of the ways He will guide you is through the Bible. So if you don’t have one, get a Bible and start reading it every day.
