Springfield, Missouri
(1999 population about 156,200)

Springfield is Missouri's third-largest city, after Kansas City and St Louis, and...

...Historic US Route 66 comes through Springfield.  "The Mother Road," a/k/a "Main St. USA," is about a mile north of the subdivision we live in.
In 1865, after an argument spawned by a poker game, "Wild Bill" Hickock had a shootout on the town square.

If you like to hunt and/or fish, you may know of Bass Pro Shops.  Many people who do neither enjoy visiting this museum/store!  More than 3.5 million visitors a year can't be wrong!
Col. Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, helped settle Ash Grove, a community near Springfield.

Missouri has many caves, and Springfield's Fantastic Caverns is one of the best!  You don't have to walk--you ride through.

Springfield has three Thai restaurants, and the food is as good as any I've eaten in over 50 Thai restaurants from Boston to San Francisco, and from England to South Africa!  I hardly ever eat Chinese food any more.
Interstate-44 passes on the north side of Springfield--Oklahoma to the west and St Louis to the northeast.  Apparently this highway is a major drug transportation route.  The Springfield News-Leader often prints stories of very large drug busts on I-44, and we have witnessed one or two.

Springfield is the home of "Houn' Dawg Dog Food."  Never heard of it?  We hadn't either, until we moved here!  But here's a shot of the billboard proudly announcing this fact to passers-by. (Still trying to get a good photo!)  [Update: they removed the billboard!!]

A report by booksellers just a few years ago named Springfield as the number one book market in the US for its size.  They said that more books are purchased per capita here than anywhere else.  The Yellow Pages had almost a full page of listings for bookstores.

Why is Springfield a major book market?  Perhaps because of the large number of institutions of higher education located in Springfield and nearby.  Springfield is home to:
